HOW TO APPLY FOR A PHD POSITION IN THE AZUMA GROUP

Guide for the application

In order to start your PhD student life in the Azuma group, you must send your application to two different organizational units: (1) the Doctoral School organized by the Jagiellonian University for your position and (2) a scholarship supported by the National Science Center (NCN) for your financial support. Note that selection processes in these units are independent.

(1) How to apply for the doctoral school (Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences, Jagiellonian University)

Please read the official announcement for the details. 

Required documents:

1. Curriculum vitae with particular emphasis on scientific achievements

2. Motivation letter explaining how the applicant’s background and research interests make them a suitable candidate for the position

3. Names and contacts of two referees

4. Proof of scientific achievements (e.g., the first page of publication)*

5. Transcript of grades or diploma supplement 

* If these documents are written in neither English nor Polish, please provide the originals together with their sworn translation to English or Polish.

Please register with the above-mentioned documents via IRK system. It is advisable to inform Yusuke Azuma (yusuke.azuma[at]uj.edu.pl ([at]=@)) about your registration.

Timeline:

1. Start of registration: 01.09 2026

2. End of registration: 07.09.2026, 9:00 (CEST, GMT+2)

3. Entrance exams: 17-18.09.2026

4. Announcement of the results: 22.09.2026

5. Entries: 23-24.09.2026 (may vary)

(2) How to apply for the NCN scholarship

Please read the official announcement for the details.

Required documents:

A. Motivation letter including why you are interested in joining our group

B. Curriculum vitae including lists of your scientific achievements (e.g., publication, presentation, award, training course, etc.)

D. Signed agreement for processing personal data (Format download, English/Polish).

Timeline:

1. Competition start date: 27.07.2026

2. Applications deadline: 23.08.2026

3. Decision of the competition shall be made by 15.09.2026

4. The project starting date: IV quarter in 2026
